Brand New Ancients

Brand New Ancients is a narrative poem written and originally performed by poet, playwright, and spoken word artist Kae Tempest. Infused with mythic resonance and epic tones, the poem is a retelling of ancient Greek tragedy set in contemporary London. It was originally written to be spoken by a single voice. But in January 2022, I worked with 3rd Year students on the BA Acting degree at University of Northampton to explore how to adapt and stage this text for multiple voices in a theatre space. Inspired by the tragic chorus of Greek theatre, contemporary dance theatre and spoken word forms, including hip hop, we worked together to find a way to bring the poem alive through nine bodies and voices, in a highly physical, embodied and live way.
